Computer embroidery is a technique for decorating fabrics by embroidering patterns with thread or special yarn. Embroidery is performed by machine and serves both decorative and functional purposes – for example, branding company clothing, patches, hats, or towels. Computer embroidery is performed by programmable machines based on a digital file.
How does embroidery work?
The graphic design is converted into an embroidery program (a file that controls the machine). The embroidery machine pierces the fabric with a needle and threads the threads in the appropriate pattern. A durable pattern is created from the threads – often embossed and highly resistant.
Advantages of embroidery:
- very durable – resistant to washing, abrasion, and ironing
- professional appearance – an elegant, prestigious effect
- embossment and texture – add character to the material
- perfect for logos, patches, and monograms.
Disadvantages of embroidery:
- limited detail – not suitable for photos or very fine details
- expensive for small patterns and a large number of colors
- not suitable for thin, stretchy fabrics – may deform them
